While IVF can help women produce more eggs in one cycle in an effort to enhance their fertility, it won’t improve the quality of those eggs. In fact, egg quality plays a crucial role in IVF success. Simply put, good quality eggs produce good quality embryos that are more likely to grow  inside the uterus successfully, thus creating a healthy, viable pregnancy. So while a woman who has a small number of high-quality eggs may be able to become pregnant through IVF, a woman who has lots of poor-quality eggs may not.

As a woman gets older, her ability to produce high-quality eggs declines considerably. “Maternal age is the most important prognostic factor in whether or not IVF will work,” says Mary Ellen Pavone, MD, an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology in the division of reproductive endocrinology and infertility at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. “As women get older, chances of success decrease.” While it’s important to be hopeful about your chances for success, it’s also wise to go into the process with your eyes wide open and your expectations realistic.  From an article by Stacey Colino medically reviewed by Kacy Church MD
